Uncharted Waters
“Always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder.“
– E.B. White (Charlotte’s Web)
One day while preparing for the Artists of Shelter Island (ARTSI), a collection of local artists on Shelter Island who open their studios, as part of their August Art show. I started to loosely paint the churning waters around Shelter Island around the South Fork. One was a commission to do a large painting one of the choppy waves and I’ve done several smaller ones since then. When I paint the turbulent waters my inspiration comes from living here on Shelter Island. I am also inspired by the famous woodcut, The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katasushika Hokusai.
Turning 80 this year made me think about what is coming…
I happened to see the phrase: “Uncharted Waters” and it resonated with my inner thoughts about the uncertainty of the years to come. I thought it would be a good theme for an exhibition dealing with thoughts and feelings about getting older. I felt compelled to paint several as my birthday in April grew nearer!
Even in turbulent times, beauty can be found.
